Gruppo Zilio is an Italian private owned company. Our main activity is the construction and management of water treatment plants. We have built the biggest plant in the world to remove boron from drinking water, located in Piombino (middle Italy), supplying water to the Elba island. But our primary competence is in the field of arsenic removal from water. The biggest and second biggest plant in Europe to remove this pollutant were built by us and are located in Aprilia (near Rome) and Franciana (near Livorno) respectively. In addition to arsenic, we are particularly skilled in fluorides removal. Recently we have directly entered the market of filtering materials, We produce our own filtering material to remove fluorides from water: hydroxylapatite. Hydroxylapatite is an inorganic ion exchanger which has outstanding adsorption capacity and can be regenerated. As far as arsenic is concerned, we have developed and currently produce a high capacity regenerable filtering medium based on iron oxide-hydroxide. In addition to the production of these filtering materials, we have an in-house regeneration plant to restore the adsorption capacity of spent iron oxide-hydroxides.
The water treatment plants with our technology for arsenic are very easy to run, do not require chemicals and often not even enery. Although our main technology is adsorption, we also master and use ultrafiltration technology, based on highly permeating silicon carbide membranes.
