Research and Technological Innovation Agency for Sustainable Development Srl, R&TIA Srl, founded in 2003, find his primary mission in seeking a Sustainable Development. R&TIA Srl support and cooperate with pubblic administration and private industries on sustainable development planning&strategies, technological innovation, technology process development having two primary objectives:
1. a Zero-Waste Circular Economy (economic and social)
2. the Energy Revolution, that is Renewable Energy Source massive diffusion.
R&TIA Srl is head-quartered in Tuscany (Italy) with operation office in Sicily, too. Our team include 2 senior scientist, 3 researcher and 5 application engineers. We have a consolidate cooperation partnership with laboratories (Osmotech srl of Pavia, Lab-Control Srl of Rovigo) and Public Research entity like ISPAAM-CNR, the Institute of Animal Production Systems in Mediterranean Environments of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (National Research Council) of Sassari. The ISPAAM-CNR with his 8 researchers, 5 senior engineers, 2 service eng. and 6 graduate, give us a fundamental scientific cooperation on agronomic applications in environmental sustainability.
Between his successful projects R&TIA Srl designed and started up a citrus juice industry (Red Island Srl) in Sicily (2004). In 2012 we developed an innovative bio-chemical process (NARDO Process Technology - NPT) able to convert Citrus Waste to Fertilizer. In 2013, the first commercial scale plant using NARDO Process Technology have been installed. This plant, with 25.000 ton/year capacity is able to produce high-value-fertilizer from citrus processing waste/by-product. The Plant started up the operation in June 2013.
In November 2014 an NPT trial applied to mud, coming from wastewater treatment plant, has been successfully run according to a Waste-To-Fertiliser conversion. The following patent request have been submitted: Italian patent Office application FI2013A000188 (application date 5.8.2013)

        A best-in-class process technology for Waste-To-Fertilizer/International partnership

        NARDO Process Technology (NPT) => Waste-To-Fertilizer
        DESCRIPTION: The worldwide food, agricultural and forestry industries produce annually large volumes of wastes, which cause a serious disposal problem. Beverages and juice industries play and important role producing these wastes. Aerobic fermentation of citrus processing waste (CPW) without any pre-treatment such as physical and chemical dehydration or extraction of essential oils is difficult to run.
        The NARDO Process Technology (NPT) is able to treat an homogeneous fraction of CPW as such pure (100% of the treated material) without mixing with macro-additives as bulk, such as ligneo-cellulosic and/or micro-additives, such as pH tuning.
        The NPT process, contrary to the known fermentation processes, does not generate significant smell and does not require conveyance and emission treatment.
        Our newest process does not generate sewage or other wastes.
        The final product of NPT process is an value-adding organic fertilizer.
        The final product, according process parameters tuning, could be a good clean sulfur-free solid fuel, too.
        The process does not involve significant consumption of primary resources such as water, heat and/or electricity; and present a positive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), i.e. it has not environmental impact.
        The investment cost is significantly lower compared of existing technologies.

        The proposed NPT process is a catalyst-based biochemical process. No pre-treatment of feed are required. The feed is 100% CPW. No additives (bulk and/or pH tuner, anti-meldew, ecc.) are required.

        The NPT technology is economic, simple, flexible, reliable, proved, profitable, innovative and
        environmental friendly technology. Investment and maintenance (O&M) costs are lower than existing
        alternative applications. All these features make the chance to turn cost (CPW management) in profit
        (fertilizer). NPT has been successfully applied to wastewater treatment plant mud according to a Waste-To-Fertilizer conversion.

        INNOVATIVE ASPECTS AND MAIN ADVANTADGES / BENEFITS: The proposed process technology NPT has
        been invented by an Italian scientist and wholly developed by the applicant. It is able to fix an historical issue of Citrus juice industry due to Citrus Processing Waste (CPW). Citrus juice industries currently treat the CPW material with dehydration process. The output is dried fiber used as ruminant food. The dehydration approach require high investment cost, relevant O&M cost and huge energy need. The dried product has lowest value in the market.

        The proposed NPT process is today the unique commercial-scale technology able to run aerobic
        fermentation process on CPW. A 25.000 tons per year capacity plant using our technology started-up in June 2013, successfully. The alfa-plant operating in Sicily and using this technology is a good example of proved, reliable, flexible, efficient and effective process technology. It is a citrus manufacturing integrated plant with continuous process approach by modular trenches. The modular designing allows an easy scaling-up (over 120.000 t/y), with a footprint of 10.000 m2.

        MARKET OF APPLICATION: The NPT technology is a profitable solution for the citrus juice industry to run waste-to-fertilizer conversion. Therefore the Market countries target are all those countries where the citrus juice industry is significantly present (USA, Brazil, China, Spain, Italy, etc.). R&TIA srl has demonstrated the profitable NPT application on different biomass by-product of food industry, wastewater treatment plant mud and Municipal organic waste.

        TYPE AND QUALIFICATION OF CO-OPERATION PARTNER: The ideal partner should be able to help R&TIA srl to successfully commercialize the proposed process technology.
